How can I tell if a distance education course or program is right for me?

There are many ways of determining if a distance education course or program is right for you. You may wish to consult with an academic advisor at the institution that offers courses or degree programs in which you are interested. If you are interested in specific courses, read the course descriptions and follow up with the instructor at the institution if additional detail is needed. Sometimes it is useful to see what textbooks and materials are required as part of the course. You may have a preference for a specific delivery mode; for example, you may prefer to meet with students in-person, and if the course or program you are interested in is offered in a geographic location accessible to you, this may be the determining factor for participation. Alternately, you may require an asynchronous course or program offered entirely via correspondence or the Internet. Here is a quiz you can take to help you determine your readiness for distance learning.

You will find that there is not as full an array of courses and degree programs in distance education modes as you will find at traditional schools, colleges and universities. However, more courses and degree programs are becoming available in accessible delivery modes each term, so check back with ONE if some particular course or program is not available now. It may be in the future.
